Driving in bright sunlight can present some safety issues. There is a 16 percent higher chance of having a life-threatening crash in bright sunlight compared to normal weather, but there are steps that people in New Mexico can take to make it less dangerous.
Simply wearing sunglasses can help. A good pair will protect people from UV rays, and they can be left in the car so that they are always available. People who live in particularly sunny places might want to consider having their windows tinted although this should be done in compliance with state law. Sun visors can also be used to block direct sunlight without impairing the view of the driver.
If possible, people should try to avoid driving during times when the sun most impairs vision. People who find themselves unable to see because of the sun should pull off the road and wait 10 or 15 minutes until the sun’s position has changed. While driving in sunlight, it is best to allow more distance than usual to other vehicles because the bright light can make quick reaction times more difficult.
If a driver causes a motor vehicle accident because of following another vehicle too closely or another type of careless behavior, the driver could be held financially responsible for people who were injured in the accident. If the driver’s insurance company does not offer enough compensation, the injured person might want to file a lawsuit. Other types of behaviors that could cause accidents are using a cellphone while driving, driving while fatigued or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. If the driver causes an accident while doing something illegal, that driver might also face criminal charges. Even if the criminal case goes to trial and the driver is not found to be guilty, a civil lawsuit may still be successful.
